Module 5, “Technologies to Support Deployment of Broadband Infrastructure,” focuses on the supply side of the broadband ecosystem. It describes the various wireline and wireless technologies being used to build broadband infrastructure, including case studies throughout the world. It describes the broadband supply chain from a topological perspective, starting from international connectivity and progressing to regional, national, and, finally, last-mile connectivity solutions. It describes the technologies being deployed in each of these segments, including fiber optics, satellite, microwave, mobile wireless, and traditional copper wire. Finally, this module addresses some of the implementation issues associated with these technologies, including open access, quality of service, and spectrum constraints.
